Jeff Ifrah to Host Panel on iGaming with NBA

GiGse has been the largest gathering of iGaming professionals from around the world.

Washington, D.C. - February 14, 2018 /MarketersMedia/ —

Attorney and iGaming investor and legal expert Jeff Ifrah has made his mark on the upcoming industry of virtual gaming and is being asked to lead a panel at the Global Interactive Summit and Expo to discuss the future of the growing market and the legalities surrounding sports betting and regulations. Ifrah will be presenting and moderating an interview with Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of the National Basketball Association, Dan Spillane, at the GiGse trade convention (Global Interactive Gaming Summit and Expo) in San Francisco to discuss the NBA’s significant shift in its opinion on sports-betting, and the future possibility of its regulation in the U.S.

Since 2011, GiGse has been the largest gathering of iGaming professionals from around the world who come to network, learn about new industry trends, and stay current on evolving gaming law. Ifrah’s highly anticipated interview with Spillane, which marks the first time a professional sports representative has participated in a gaming conference, will be enhanced by previously recorded interviews of leaders within the English Premier League, and leading US legislators pushing for sports betting regulation, all of which have been produced exclusively for the GiGse plenary session.

The NBA created a media stir with a notable November 2014 editorial by Commissioner Adam Silver, which called for the U.S. federal government to legalize sports betting as a way to make the inevitable pastime more transparent, safer for bettors, and subject to strict regulatory oversight. Illegal betting already accounts for $400 billion in wagers, by some estimates, primarily through unregulated offshore Internet services or the old fashioned backroom bookie. The article sent a seismic shock through the professional sports world, as the official NBA position for over twenty years had consistently opposed any expansion of sports betting. “Times are changing fast,” said Jeff Ifrah. “Ideas that were once unthinkable ten or even five years ago are now becoming more accepted as logic begins to supersede antiquated and sometimes arbitrary morality laws. The advantages of legal, regulated gambling clearly outweigh the negatives. Gambling happens, and no laws can stop it. But it can be taken out of the shadows to make it safer for everyone involved, especially the consumer who is currently at the mercy of unknown foreign website operators with no recourse for fraud. It’s great to see a prominent organization like the NBA take a bold position on the issue, and I look forward to my discussion with Dan Spillane at GiGse in April.”

Jeff Ifrah is the founding partner of Ifrah Law, based in Washington, DC, practicing law for more than twenty years, licensed to practice in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC. For four years in a row, Chambers USA has recognized him as one of the leading U.S. attorneys for litigation in the areas of Gaming and Licensing, as well as White Collar Crime and Government Investigations. Most recently he was named “Local Litigation Star” in the District of Columbia by publication Benchmark Litigation. He has won numerous legal victories in criminal and civil antitrust suits, representing some of the biggest corporations in the country within the industries of healthcare, pharmaceuticals and technology.

Effort to help monarch butterflies gets boost in marketplace

Aug 22, 2018

MONTREAL — An initiative to market milkweed for the benefit of monarch butterflies — and the farmers in Quebec and Vermont who grow it — is getting a boost from a Canadian parka company that is renewing its commitment to sell coats made with the plant's floss. It's an experimental manufacturing and retailing effort, which started in 2016 when Quartz Co. made and sold a few hundred coats with milkweed fiber as the insulation. After modest growth of its distribution last year, the company is introducing its third generation in September and additional styles in October. Having served as a...

Reality bites on a trip to find Lincoln's humble log cabin

Aug 22, 2018

HODGENVILLE, Ky. — Years ago, I'd heard that people making the pilgrimage to the tiny log cabin on the farm where Abraham Lincoln was born sometimes burst into tears when they glimpsed it. That alone made it seem worth a trip to Sinking Spring Farm in the remote town of Hodgenville, Kentucky. And so my wife, Lucy, and I set out for a visit. As it turned out, the reality was a little different from what we expected. Historians have said Lincoln's hardscrabble early years contributed much to his character. "I was born, and have ever remained, in the most...

Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha as pilgrims conduct hajj rites

Aug 22, 2018

MINA, Saudi Arabia — Muslims are celebrating Eid al-Adha as over 2 million pilgrims carry out the final rites of the hajj in Saudi Arabia. Pilgrims walked to a complex in Mina on Tuesday to throw pebbles at three columns. Muslims believe the devil tried to talk the Prophet Ibrahim out of submitting to God's will there. Muslims believe Ibrahim's faith was tested when God commanded him to sacrifice his only son Ismail. God stayed his hand, sparing his son. In the Christian and Jewish version of the story, Abraham is ordered to kill his other son, Isaac. The final...

A dog's life: fitness trackers help put fat pets on a diet

Aug 22, 2018

PRAGUE — When Czech entrepreneur Robert Hasek began jogging with his dog, Darwin, the three-mile runs were making the bull terrier sick with fatigue. Hasek was surprised, thinking his dog led a healthy lifestyle. To solve the mystery, he strapped a Fitbit to Darwin and discovered he was actually only active in his presence. Otherwise, Hasek says, "he is lying, sleeping and doing nothing. He's lazy!" The businessman sensed an opportunity and developed one of the world's first dog fitness trackers. His product is part of a growing industry of gadgets for pets that includes GPS trackers, automatic feeders, ball...
