ROCKVILLE, Conn. — A woman charged with trying to steal the notes of a right-wing commentator who was at the University of Connecticut to give a speech titled "It's OK To Be White" has thanked her supporters for helping her fight "against racism." Catherine Gregory, of Willimantic, took papers from a lectern as Gateway Pundit writer Lucian Wintrich prepared to speak last month and is charged with attempted larceny and disorderly conduct. JERUSALEM — The Israeli military said it intercepted two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel on Wednesday in the latest barrage by Palestinian militants. No injuries were reported. Palestinian militants have fired about a dozen rockets at Israel in the week since President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Hamas called for a new armed uprising against Israel in response to Trump's declaration. Israeli strikes...

Abbas says UN should replace US as Mideast mediator

Dec 13, 2017

ISTANBUL — Breaking with years of courting the U.S., Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called Wednesday for the United Nations to replace Washington as a Mideast mediator and suggested he might not cooperate with the Trump administration's much-anticipated effort to hammer out an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. At a summit in Turkey, Arab and Muslim leaders "rejected and condemned" President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital — the trigger for Abbas' sharp policy pivot — but stopped short of backing his more combative approach toward Washington. A possible Palestinian refusal to engage with the U.S. and growing backlash against Trump's...

Dec 13, 2017

WASHINGTON — The Latest on the Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting (all times local): 2:10 p.m. Federal Reserve policymakers expect U.S. economic growth will accelerate next year and the unemployment rate will fall to 3.9 percent from its current level of 4.1 percent. But they still plan to raise short-term interest rates three times next year and at least twice in 2019, the same as previous estimates. Fed officials sharply increased their growth projection for 2018, to 2.5 percent from 2.1 percent in September. Some analysts thought the faster growth would cause the Fed to pencil in four rates next...

WASHINGTON — Melania Trump says she hopes the giving spirit that Americans displayed during a season of devastating hurricanes will continue over Christmas and into the new year.
