Danish govt: Minister's views on fasting Muslims are her own

May 22, 2018

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Assertions by Denmark's immigration minister that Muslims fasting for Ramadan pose a safety hazard in some jobs do not represent the views of the country's government, a spokeswoman for the ruling coalition said Tuesday. Integration Minister Inger Stoejberg faced growing criticism over a blog post published Monday that urged residents observing a month of dawn-to-dusk fasting to take leave from work "to avoid negative consequences for the rest of Danish society." Karen Ellemann, chief whip of the Liberal Party, said Tuesday after an ordinary party meeting that Stoejberg's remarks were not a formal proposal to change the...

'Wake-up call': Vegas casino workers vote on citywide strike

May 22, 2018

LAS VEGAS — Hundreds of unionized Las Vegas casino workers gathered at a university arena in red T-shirts and work uniforms as they voted Tuesday on whether to call for a citywide strike that could have huge financial implications for the tourist-dependent destination. Members of the Culinary Union cast ballots in the first of two separate sessions expected to draw as many as 25,000 workers and show the collective power of the largest labor organization in Nevada. A majority yes vote would not immediately affect the casinos but would give union negotiators a huge bargaining chip by allowing them to...

In Salah's Nile delta village, the Egyptian is a super hero

May 22, 2018

NAGRIG, Egypt — The cafe began to fill up more than two hours before kickoff. By the time the match began, some 200 men and boys — some as young as five — huddled around two large TV screens at a cafe Mohamed Salah frequents when he's back visiting his village deep in Egypt's Nile Delta. Salah didn't score, but almost everyone at the cafe let out a joyous scream and clapped enthusiastically at the final whistle: Liverpool, the English club for which Salah has scored more than 40 goals since he joined this season, has reached the final of...

Golden age of new theme park rides led by Orlando

May 22, 2018

ORLANDO, Fla. — If this is a golden age for theme parks, then nowhere are new thrills more abundant than in Orlando where the major theme park resorts have been in an arms race, opening new attractions every year recently, with even bigger blockbusters slated for next year. Theme park aficionados will have to wait until 2019 for the openings of a Star Wars land at Walt Disney World, a new Harry Potter ride at Universal Orlando Resort and a Sesame Street-themed land at SeaWorld Orlando.
